Fundamentals of Oedema Management
Fundamentals of Oedema Management, 24th September
This workshop will provide an understanding of the anatomy and physiology of oedema as well as the underlying mechanisms of oedema development. The impact of the venous, lymphatic and arterial systems on oedema will be discussed. Recommended assessments will be reviewed and demonstrated. Compression bandaging and compression garments will be presented as treatment modalities and the theoretical rationale for their use will be detailed. Participants will have opportunity to develop clinical reasoning skills through the use of case studies and practical sessions.
Participants are invited to bring their own experiences and case studies (including photos) for discussion throughout the program.
Upon conclusion of the course, participants will:
- Be able to identify the signs and symptoms of oedema
- Be able to identify the underlying causes of oedema
- Recognise different types of oedema
- Clinically assess oedema
- Be able to apply simple compression bandaging for lower limb oedema management
- Be able problem solve appropriate ready-to-wear garment prescription for lower limbs
Participants will receive compression product information.
Samples of key bandaging products used during the course will be available.
A workbook with key notes will be provided.

Dr Amanda Pigott
Dr Amanda Pigott is an occupational therapist with extensive experience in oedema and lymphoedema management. Amanda has worked with a wide range of conditions requiring oedema management. Amanda has obtained her PhD studying the effects of cancer-related fatigue on radiotherapy patients. She currently works in the cancer-related lymphoedema service at the Princess Alexandra Hospital.
