VIC | 1.5 Day Dry Needling
The aim is to provide you with the knowledge and skills required to apply dry needling in your daily practice. Learn how to incorporate dry needling into your current treatment for plantar heel pain, Achilles and posterior tibial dysfunction and more common foot and leg conditions.
By the end of this course, participants should be able to:
- List the key anatomical features and signs and symptoms associated with an active myofascial trigger point
- Describe the principles of dry needling and its mode of action
- Describe where dry needling fits into the management of a patient with a musculoskeletal condition associated with myofascial pain
- State the overall evidence for dry needling for myofascial pain
- List the absolute and relative contraindications of dry needling
- Perform various dry needling techniques, within the leg and foot, to provide an optimal dose of dry needling
Matthew Cotchett B.Sc., B.Pod (hons)., PhD
Matthew is a Podiatrist, Lecturer and early career researcher at La Trobe University and works as the Education Officer for the Australasian College of Podiatric Surgeons.
Matthew has a particular interest in the management of pain beneath the heel and completed a PhD which evaluated the effectiveness of trigger point dry needling for plantar heel pain. Matthew’s research interest is in the psychosocial aspects of musculoskeletal pain, with a particular focus on cognitive, affective and behavioural factors as drivers of pain and disability. In addition, Matthew is leading a project to improve knowledge translation and treatment of people with plantar heel pain. A list of Matthew’s recent publications can be found here:

Mark Millerd B.Pod
Mark is a podiatrist who obtained his degree in podiatry at LaTrobe University in 2003 and practices out of his clinic, Base Podiatry on the Mornington Peninsula. Mark has a major interest in the use of manual therapies in the treatment of foot and leg conditions, in particular, the use of trigger point dry needling and injection therapies.
As part of his practice, Mark provides a bike fitting service under the name Fit2Cycle which aims to help cyclists improve their function and position, particularly those who experience cycling related injury or discomfort.
Mark also provides professional development courses under the banner “Run Courses” with podiatric colleagues Dr Matthew Cotchett and Ben Millerd. The focus of these courses is to teach the benefits of trigger point dry needling to podiatrists and how to incorporate its use into clinical practice.
Mark has an active interest in the golf footwear industry as director of Jack Oliver Golf Co, who are the exclusive distributors of TRUE linkswear golf shoes throughout Australia and New Zealand.
