Presentation: Prescribing Exercise for the Older Person - More than just a double leg calf raise

We all know exercise is essential for health aging. But as Podiatrists, we’re not taught what that actually means for the patients who come through our doors. Especially for those with limited exercise experience, co-morbid conditions and pain/injury.

In this session, I’m going to go through the knowledge you need to feel confident recommending and prescribing exercise rehabilitation for older patients, including strength, balance and return to walking. As well as how you can avoid common errors such as underusing that limit their improvement.

We’ll also discuss minimum and recommended exercise guidelines, what they mean for us and how we can work more effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team to better help this patient population stay active and healthy.

How I confidently prescribe exercise for every person in my clinic - My framework for the elderly to athletes

Stuck giving everyone the same exercises? Feel unsure what sets and reps to prescribe? Unsure how to prescribe around pain, or progress exercises as your patient improves?

Then this session is for you!

In this workshop, I’m going to take you through the step by step framework I use to prescribe exercises for every single patient that comes through my clinic.

From the elderly through to performance athletes, I distill my years of experience as a strength and conditioning coach and rehabilitating foot and ankle injuries in clinic.

No gimics, proprietary systems or fluff. Just a easy to use framework that will guide you through: • How to choose which exercises and how many

  • What sets and reps to prescribe
  • Selecting weight and exercise intensity
  • Adjusting program frequency around other their other exercise and activities
  • How to modify technique and speed for injury and pain
  • When to progress and regress

You’ll walk away from this session with clear guidance on how to prescribe a full exercise program for whatever comes through your door Monday morning.
