Return to practice

If you're a podiatrist planning to return to practice after a break, or you've been working limited hours, it's important to understand the Recency of Practice requirements set by the Podiatry Board of Australia
These standards ensure you maintain the skills and knowledge necessary for safe and effective care.
To meet the Recency of Practice standard, practitioners must practise in their scope of practice for a minimum of:
- 450 hours in the previous three years (approx. 3 months full time), or
- 150 hours in the previous 12 months (approx. 1 month full time).
What You Need to Do to Re-Register
Less than 2 years of experience and absent from practice for more than 12 months: conditions will be placed on your registration
- 2 years or more prior experience and absent from practice between 1-3 years: complete at least one year's continuing professional development (CPD) relevant to your intended scope of practice
- 2 years or more prior experience and absent from practice for more than 3 years: submit a re-entry plan to the Podiatry Board of Australia.

Returning under Supervision (not yet registered)
If you are not yet re-registered and need to complete supervised practice as part of your re-entry plan:
- You must have an approved supervision plan with the Podiatry Board of Australia
- Even under supervision, you must be covered by PII for any clinical work you perform. If your employer or supervising organisation provides cover, confirm it meets the Podiatry Board of Australia's PI insurance standard. If you do not, you must arrange your own cover.
