This session will provide podiatry practice owners with a practical overview of remuneration structures through the lens of the industrial relations (IR) framework and associated risk considerations. We will begin with a brief outline of key IR obligations, including employee versus contractor classification, minimum wage requirements, and why getting these settings right is critical to compliance. We will then provide a high-level overview of common remuneration models used in podiatry - such as salaried roles, base plus commission structures, commission-only arrangements (generally not recommended), and contractor models - to set context.
The session will then focus on the key risks associated with commission-based structures, including compliance risks (such as underpayment and record-keeping), as well as ethical considerations where revenue-based incentives may influence clinical decision-making, particularly for newer graduates who are still building confidence. Finally, we will highlight the increasing scrutiny around contractor arrangements and conclude by encouraging members to seek tailored advice from reward and remuneration specialists, as required.
