Falls Prevention & Safe Mobility Strategies for Older Adults
Join us for this 40-minute presentation and 10-minute Q&A session on the topic of Falls Prevention & Safe Mobility Strategies for Older Adults.
This session will explore practical, evidence-based strategies to support older adults at risk of falls, with a focus on considerations specific to podiatrists working in the home-care and aged-care sectors. The presentation will cover:
- Key contributors to falls risk (strength, balance, gait, footwear, home environment).
- How podiatrists can identify subtle changes in mobility during home visits.
- Practical screening tools that can be integrated into short appointments.
- Simple things to look for when you are watching a client move around the house.
- Simple strength and balance exercises podiatrists can safely prescribe or reinforce.
- Communication strategies for motivating older clients who may be reluctant or fearful after a fall.
- Case examples demonstrating collaborative approaches between physiotherapy and podiatry.
- Manual-handling considerations and managing high-falls risk clients.
Participants will leave with actionable strategies they can apply immediately to enhance client safety, reduce falls risk and strengthen interdisciplinary care.
What we will cover:
1. Identify key contributors to falls
2. Outline practical changes and manual handling techniques to be implemented into their practice at home visits
3. Learn strength and balance exercises used by allied health colleagues in older populations
