Live & Local Sydney: Trigger Point Dry Needling for Podiatrists

The aim of this face to face, one-day, hands-on course is to provide you with the knowledge and skills to apply trigger point dry needling in your practice for a range of musculoskeletal conditions, including but not limited to plantar heel pain, Achilles tendinopathy, medial tibial stress syndrome and chronic ankle instability.

By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

• List the key anatomical features and signs and symptoms associated with an active myofascial trigger point
• Describe the principles of dry needling and its mode of action
• Describe where dry needling fits into the management of a patient with a musculoskeletal condition associated with myofascial pain
• State the overall evidence for dry needling for myofascial pain
• List the absolute and relative contraindications of dry needling
• Perform various dry needling techniques, within the leg and foot, to provide an optimal dose of dry needling 

Teaching Model & Resource Materials
In this workshop, the ‘flipped classroom’ model will be used to guide the teaching of dry needling. The 'flipped classroom' is structured around the idea that lecture or direct instruction is not the best use of class time. Instead particpants will encounter information beforehand, freeing up workshop time for activities that involve higher order thinking. Therefore, prior to the workshop, you'll be required to view online resources, including lecture material and readings. These can be accessed at your own convenience and will free up time during the course for practicing assessment techniques and performing dry needling.

The Presenter:

Dr Matthew Cotchett
B.Sc., B.Pod (Hons)., Grad Cert (HigherEd)., PhD

Matthew is a Senior Lecturer at La Trobe University and an Advanced Practicing Podiatrist in the Orthopaedics Outpatient’s Department at Northern Health, Epping, Melbourne. Matthew has worked as a clinical podiatrist for the past 24 years and as an academic for 17 years. As a Podiatrist in a large Tertiary hospital, Matthew’s role is to triage, assess, and treat patients referred by their General Practitioner for a specialist orthopaedic opinion. As an academic, Matthew has authored 22 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles, 3 editorials and two book chapters.

Matthew has a particular interest in the management of pain beneath the heel and completed a PhD which evaluated the effectiveness of trigger point dry needling for plantar heel pain. Matthew’s research interest is in the psychosocial aspects of musculoskeletal pain, with a particular focus on cognitive, affective and behavioural factors as drivers of pain and disability.

Matthew is currently involved in projects designed to build and implement freely accessible educational resources for people with plantar heel pain, foot osteoarthritis and also hallux valgus.
