Infection Control Workshops: Supporting best practice across Australia
18 Dec 2025
In 2025, the APodA proudly delivered a series of Infection Control Workshops across Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane. These workshops brought podiatrists and practice support staff together to share local challenges, explore supplier options, and strengthen risk strategies, all with the goal of aligning with the latest national standards.
As part of our role in keeping the profession up to date, the APodA highlighted the important regulatory changes introduced in 2024. The NSQHS Infection Prevention and Control guidelines were updated to reflect the new Australian Standard AS5369, which sets out requirements for processing reusable instruments in private practice settings.
Our workshops provided the knowledge and practical tools podiatrists need to meet these obligations with confidence.
Delivered as half day intensives by Emma Coombes, Rob Mullins, and Steve Lines, the program covered a wide range of essential topics, including:
- Legal obligations and compliance with AS5369
- Hand hygiene, PPE, and sharps disposal
- Clinic design and clinical cleaning
- Instrument reprocessing and waste management
- Health & safety, workplace environment, and documentation requirements
- Risk management, audits, and sterilising instruments in non‑clinical settings
The workshops were enriched by the insights of our presenters, who helped translate complex standards into practical, everyday processes. We also extend our gratitude to Mocom, Plena Healthcare, and Briggate Medical for their generous sponsorship, which made these events possible.
By combining expert knowledge, peer collaboration, and industry support, the Infection Control Workshops marked a significant step forward in strengthening podiatry practice nationwide.
The APodA remains committed to delivering ongoing education that empowers podiatrists and their teams to meet evolving standards and continue providing safe, high quality care.
