Journal of Foot and Ankle Publication Support Policy

Journal of Foot and Ankle Publication Support Policy

Background

Since the establishment of the Journal of Foot and Ankle Research (JFAR), the Australian Podiatry Association (APodA) has actively supported podiatry research by subsidising article processing charges for eligible member submissions.

This investment reflects the APodA's ongoing commitment to strengthening evidence-based practice, building research capability within the profession and increasing the visibility and impact of podiatry research nationally and internationally.

Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to provide clarity on:

  • Eligibility criteria for the APodA's support of JFAR publication submissions
  • The process for eligible APodA members to apply for publication support
  • Opportunities for supported authors to contribute back to the profession through education and knowledge sharing following publication

Policy statement

A core benefit of the APodA membership is access to publication support for eligible members submitting research to JFAR.

This policy applies to all eligible members who apply for JFAR publication support through the APodA. Members who receive publication support are required to comply with the requirements outlined in this policy.

Eligibility

To be eligible for JFAR publication support, applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

Membership status

The applicant must be a current financial member of the APodA in one of the following membership categories:

  • Professional
  • New Professional
  • Affiliate
  • Honorary (must hold an active Ahpra registration)

Membership history

The applicant must have held continuous membership with the APodA for a minimum of two (2) years prior to application, with no gaps in membership, no outstanding debt or written off debt owed to the APodA.

Authorship

The applicant must be listed as either the first or last author on the manuscript submitted for publication.

Funding limits and allocation

The APodA allocates a defined annual budget to support member publications in JFAR. To ensure this support is distributed equitably and sustainably, limits apply to individual applicants.

  • An individual member may receive support for a maximum of two (2) approved applications per calendar year.
  • Applications are assessed in the order received and are subject to the availability of funds.

Assessment and authorisation

All applications are assessed against the published eligibility criteria and the availability of funds in the relevant calendar year.

The APodA reserves the right to:

  • Decline applications that do not meet eligibility requirements, and/or
  • Decline or defer applications once annual funding has been fully allocated.

Support for publication fees does not constitute endorsement by the APodA of the research findings, methodologies, products or services referenced in the published article.

In-kind member contribution

As part of the APodA's commitment to knowledge sharing and professional development, successful applicants whose articles are published in JFAR may be invited to collaborate with the APodA on an education or engagement activity related to their research.

Examples may include:

  • Presenting at an APodA conference or symposium
  • Delivering an online webinar or professional learning activity

Any request for collaboration will occur within 24 months of publication of the article in JFAR.

Reporting and record keeping

To support transparency, good governance, and responsible stewardship of member funds:

  • Quarterly reports are provided to the APodA Board outlining approved applications, including applicant name, membership period, publication title, and financial support provided.
  • Publication details, including the title, publication date, and value of financial support, are also recorded in the individual member's APodA database record.

Submission responsibilities

Applicants are responsible for:

  • Understanding and complying with the JFAR manuscript submission requirements, and
  • Ensuring all publisher documentation and timelines are met.
