Cairns Diabetes Centre
The Diabetes Centre is the major specialist referral and resource centre in Far North Queensland and provides diabetes services to the Torres Cape, and Cairns and Hinterland Health Service areas. The team provides in reach services to the Cairns Hospital, outreach and telehealth services to the Cairns Hinterland Hospital Health Service (CHHHS) and telehealth services to the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service (TCHHS).
The Diabetes Centre applies a multidisciplinary team approach to care in a collaborative practice model. The team includes medical specialists, nurse practitioner, clinical nurse consultant, diabetes nurse educators, research nurse, enrolled nurses, dietitians, podiatrists, social worker, psychologists, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers, and administration staff.
Clinical Practice
- Demonstrate competent knowledge and skill in the provision of podiatry services commensurate with level of experience in accordance with prescribed professional and ethical standards, existing evidence-based practice and established clinical protocols.
- As experience builds, apply increasingly independent clinical judgement to more complex clinical decision making under clinical practice supervision or professional guidance of a more senior podiatrist.
- Contribute to the ongoing development and delivery of podiatry services including telehealth.
- Contribute to the assessment, management and reporting of acute foot disease within 48 hours of referral in accordance with the high-risk foot ambulatory model key performance indicators.
Communication/Team Participation
- Maintain appropriate documentation and patient records in line with Departmental, Unit and Health Service procedures, and contribute to the maintenance of accurate and timely information systems (statistics collection, quality data).
- Work cooperatively and effectively through active participation in the multidisciplinary High Risk Foot team, and with patients, their families, carers, and other relevant stakeholders to provide high quality patient care and positively influence culture.
- Actively participate in a working environment supporting quality human resource management practices including employment equity, anti-discrimination, workplace health and safety and ethical behaviour.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of health education and health promotion programs on foot health in collaboration with the Podiatry and High-Risk Foot team.
- Provide supervision for pre-entry level podiatry students and Allied Health Assistants, as well as in-service training to other health professionals with the support of senior clinical staff.
Leadership/Work Unit Management
- Participate in initiating, developing, and implementing quality and service improvement activities to continually improve patient care, including the development of clinical practices, procedures, and protocols within the work environment.
- Continually develop own professional knowledge, skills, and abilities as they relate to the duties and responsibilities of the position, including committing to an individual development plan.
- Develop clinical practice knowledge and expertise through active learning within the Podiatry and multidisciplinary team, as well as engaging in professional development activities to ensure maintenance of relevant AHPRA registration.
- Develop and utilise knowledge and skills in research protocols and methodology relevant to health practitioner practice.
